HISTORY: Light Yagami was born in Japan to Sachiko and Soichiro Yagami where they lived until shortly after his younger sister Sayu's birth, when they moved to the United States. Light Yagami was always a brilliant child, and not only excelled in academics but also placed first in the National Junior Tennis Championship in middle school, after which he announced his retirement from the sport in order to devote his time to his studies. Not too long ago he started his studies at Princeton University entering with a perfect SAT score. Other than being a tennis star and a genius, though, Light's life has been rather uneventful- there are no great tragedies in his past, no dead parents or the like. He's been fortunate that life up until now has treated him well, giving him intelligence, good lucks, athleticism, and a loving, living, family.
(Note: Since I don't know L's history, I don't want to say too much about him, though if in his AU history, L is still a famous detective, I would like to add that Light respects L and to an almost obsessive degree follows the cases he works on. Light either wants to work with L one day or, if possible, replace him, though which it is even Light's not sure.)
PERSONALITY: Light is arrogant. He knows he's smart, has been praised for it since childhood, and therefore values his intelligence above almost anything else in the world. And yet despite his arrogance, he knows how to be charming, disarmingly so, that he easily makes friends despite his high opinion of himself. Of course, he often thinks of himself above his peers, but he is wise enough to know when to show this.
Light has always been fascinated with justice. Because the world he grew up in was very black and white just in the fact that he hasn't been exposed to such things as poverty and death, Light tends to think that way- things for him are either good or evil.
He is an optimist- he really believes that good always prevails over evil, that the world ultimately rewards good people. He believes that everyone has the capacity for good, as long as they are guided correctly towards that path. Sometimes Light considers the possibility of changing the world so that there is no more crime or evil in the world, though he knows this is a distant, impossible, dream.
